Pursuing Accountability in Yemen

Details

Our team of legal experts will launch in early 2018 a capacity building project in Yemen supporting human rights defenders on the ground. GRC aims to advise upon the current investigations into violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights during the active conflict in accordance with international standards.

GRC aims to deliver in 2018 a comprehensive strategy strengthening the capacity of human rights defenders, reviewing existing evidence and training upon investigations, evidence preservation and interviewing skills. It will prepare dossiers, if applicable to the Group of Regional and International Experts as mandated by the Human Rights Council Session 36 and other relevant international bodies. It will further consider the feasibility of future domestic prosecutions and universal jurisdiction claims.

The project will focus particularly on starvation as a distinct crime and the prospects of prosecuting starvation, the withholding of food and/or the deliberate destruction of agricultural areas in Yemen.

GRC have connected with a wide range of human rights defenders, civil society, stakeholders, experts and governmental institutions in Yemen and internationally in order to strengthen the project’s prospects for accountability for the crimes being committed in Yemen.

In providing this service, we will rely on the professional experience of our team. Project leads are Managing Partner Wayne Jordash QC and GRC Senior Consultants Catriona Murdoch, Ashley Jordana and Lina Baddour, who collectively have decades of experience in international humanitarian and criminal law.

For more information about the training, or our work in Yemen, please contact Catriona Murdoch at [email protected].
